| Synopsis: |
Assata Shakur, falsely convicted of killing a cop in an infamous 1973 NJ Turnpike police massacre shootup of a car with Black Panthers, in which a Panther leader was killed, she was wounded three times, and a State Trooper caught a police bullet killing him. Sentenced to Life, Assata escaped in 1979 from maximum security prison in NJ to eventually emerge in Cuba under Fidel Castro's protection as a political exile. Assata's writings and presence in Cuba have brought her a huge following as an icon, a heroine--the Che Guevera of Black Liberation--a freedom fighter to thousands of young minority peoples throughout the world. The State of New Jersey still holds a million dollar bounty on her head--wanted dead or alive! |
